FRESNO, Calif. --- With one full season under his belt, head men's tennis coach Evan Austin announced Wednesday that Ethan Lopez, Gabor Csonka and John Darmstaedter have all signed National Letters of Intent for his first fall recruiting class to play for the Bulldogs beginning in the 2013-14 season.
Lopez, a native of Oxnard, Calif., is ranked as the #32 player in California and #131 nationally, as well as being a four-star recruit according to tennisrecruiting.net . He has attained a great deal of success this spring which was highlighted by tournament wins at the South Bay Junior Open, Lakewood Winter Junior Open, and a number of Men's Open Tournament wins. Lopez will graduate from El Camino High School in June.
"I'm extremely excited about the addition of Ethan to our roster," Austin said. "He's a guy who loves to put in time on the court and he's really going to flourish in a structured training environment. Ethan has had some terrific results at the junior and adult levels this spring and I look for him to step in and have a positive impact on our roster this fall."
Csonka is a native of Nyiregyhaza, Hungary and has career high ATP rankings of 1236 in singles and 1343 in doubles. He will graduate from Zrinyi Ilona Secondary Grammar School in June and has been ranked in the top three nationally in Hungary from ages 14-18.
"Gabor is going to bring a great deal of International experience to our roster in 2013-2014,"Austin said. "He's qualified for main draws of a number of Men's Futures events along with obtaining ATP points in singles and doubles. He's highly motivated to take his game to the highest levels of college tennis and has goals of continuing on to the pro tour after college, which is something we really look for in our players. I'm really looking forward to his first season as a Bulldog."
Darmstaedter hails from Hamburg, Germany and the Rudolf Seiner School of Hamburg from where he will graduate in June. Darmstaedter currently ranks #180 in the German Men's U21 rankings and has advanced to the round of 16 at the ITF Grade 4 Odense and second round of the main draw at ITF the Grade 4 Hamburg in singles.
"John is an extremely motivated student-athlete who has a ton of upside," Austin said. "He's a very good athlete and is going to thrive in the college tennis environment. He's going to bring a great deal of energy and a hard working attitude to our roster next season. I believe his game is going to take off very quickly once he arrives here in the fall, and I can't wait to begin working with him."
Austin was hired in the fall of 2012 and has added quality players since his arrival. With only four team members in the fall, he signed Felipe Fritz and Nikolas Papic to join the Bulldogs in January of 2013, who both excelled in their first seasons as Bulldogs. Fritz climbed his way from the six spot all the way to No. 1 while Papic developed into a solid middle of the lineup player.
After a rebuilding and transition year in 2012-13, Austin looks forward to the addition of Lopez, Csonka and Darmstaedter as the 'Dogs strive for a return to their national success.
