GODFREY, Ill. - TCU sophomore Nick Chappell claimed a first-round win Wednesday at the Lewis and Clark Community College USTA Men's Futures Tennis Tournament.
The Indianapolis, Ind., native was a 6-7 (4), 6-0, 2-3, ret., winner over Artem Baradach of Belarus. He squares off with Oklahoma's Costin Paval in tomorrow's round of 16.
Chappell qualified for the event after winning four matches in the 128-player qualifying draw. As one of eight qualifiers, Chappell advanced to the 32-player main draw of singles.
While competing as an amateur in the professional event, Chappell earned an ATP point in singles for the first time, landing him in the ATP singles world rankings.
"To get an ATP point was one of Nick's goals for the summer," TCU coach David Roditi said. "I'm proud of him for getting out and competing against top competition and playing well."
