Lobos Travel to Compete in ITA Mountain Regional Championships

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The UNM men’s tennis team will be traveling to Las Vegas, Nev. to compete in the ITA Mountain Regional Championships. The event will take place at the Darling Tennis Center from October 17-21.

This will be one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place over these middle two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions from the regionals will advance to the 2012 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 8-11, at the indoor facilities at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.

The tournament will feature U.S. Air Force Academy, Boise State, Brigham Young, Denver, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, University of Nevada at Reno, UNM, New Mexico State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, UNLV, Utah, and Weber State.

In the singles draw, the Lobos have six seeds in the tournament. Mads Hegelund, Riaan Du Toit, and Mitch McDaniels are all seeded number 25, Conor Berg is seeded number 12, Samir Iftikhar is seeded number nine and the highest seed for UNM in the singles draw is Jadon Phillips, who is seeded number four in the tournament.

The 58th nationally ranked doubles duo, Conor Berg and Jadon Phillips, are seeded number three in the doubles draw receiving a bye in the round of 64.

“It is our biggest and last event of the fall season,” Head Coach Alan Dils said. “We are excited to play as we have put in a lot of hard work this fall and have seen a great deal of improvement in each of the guys.”

Wednesday's first round of doubles starts at 8:00 a.m. MT with the first round of singles following at 9:00 a.m. MT. There will be consolation draws in singles and doubles to ensure each entrant at least two matches.
