Men's Tennis Fall Season Ends

Nov. 4, 2012

LAS VEGAS ( - Host UNLV closed its fall tournament season Sunday with a final slate of matches at the Larry Easley Memorial Classic at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

The Rebels came up empty in all three finals they were part of Sunday. The doubles team of Johannes Markel and Tamas Batyi lost to SMU's Mischa Nowicki and Arturs Kazijevs, 8-3; Bernard Schoeman fell in straight sets in the championship of Flight Two singles, 6-3, 6-2 to SMU's Nate Lammons; and Willie Sublette lost 6-1, 6-2 to Arizona's Carlos Bermudez in the Flight Two consolation final.

"We had a rough day today and were unable to get a win but hats off to all of the winners," said UNLV head coach Owen Hambrook. "Overall, the team had a great tournament and we will keep working hard to get ready for the spring. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us today and also thanks to the trainers and support staff for making this a great event once again."

UNLV is now off until hosting Utah State in a dual match on January 25.

Oklahoma State's Rifat Biktyakov won Flight One honors on Sunday with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Arizona's Kieren Thompson. Players from six other programs competed in the individual event: Arkansas, Arizona, Oklahoma State, SMU, NAU and Seminole State College located in Seminole, Okla.

The annual tournament was renamed in 2010 in honor of UNLV Hall of Famer Larry Easley, who passed away from illness in 2005 at the age of 57. Easley coached the UNLV men's tennis team longer than anyone in history and produced sometimes-spectacular results over his dozen seasons from 1993-2002, including producing five All-Americans and two NCAA individual champions.
