Feb. 16, 2013
FRESNO, Calif. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team (19-5 overall, 8-3 MW) struggled shooting the ball and with turnovers as they fell 61-47 against the Fresno State Bulldogs (17-7, 9-2 MW) on Saturday afternoon in Fresno.
"We knew coming into the situation that Fresno State is the defending champion of the WAC and they played that way today," said head coach Joe Legerski. "They were aggressive and we got full court pressure, which wasn't something that we weren't expecting. We turned the ball over a number of times because they were active and that we created problems for us. It caused us to rush our shots and we couldn't get into the offense. You have to give credit to Fresno on that."
Chaundra Sewell finished the game with a team high 11 points and eight rebounds. She was followed by Kayla Woodward with her 10 points and seven rebounds, while two others followed with seven. The Cowgirls shot 17-49 (.347) from the field and 3-11 (.273) from beyond the arc. They turned the ball over a season high 24 times while giving up 29 points off those turnovers.
Fresno State was led by Ki-Ki Moore with 20 points in her 37 minutes of action. Alex Sheedy followed with 16 points and seven rebounds while Bree Farley added 11 points and eight rebounds. The Bulldogs shot 22-59 (.424) from the field and out rebounded Wyoming 37-33.
Kaitlyn Mileto scored the first two baskets for the Cowgirls while Taylor Thompson got the Bulldogs on the board to make it 4-2. The two teams would combined for eight points over the next couple of minutes as Wyoming took an 8-6 lead into the first media timeout. Out of the break, Rosie Moult scored five of the next seven to give Fresno State their first lead of the game, 11-10. A basket by Chaundra Sewell would end a couple minute scoreless stretch for the Cowgirls to put them back up by one, 12-11. The Bulldogs answered with 11 straight including eight of those points coming from Ki-Ki Moore to give them a double-figure lead, 22-12, with six minutes left in the half. With four minutes left in the half, Sewell made a layup to end the almost seven minute drought. Unfortunately, Fresno State closed out the half on an 8-2 run to take a 30-16 lead into the locker room.
Four Cowgirls finished the half with four points each to reach the 16 points. Chaundra Sewell recorded a team high six rebounds. Wyoming shot 8-27 (.296) for the half and 0-3 (.000) from beyond the arc while committing 14 turnovers. The Bulldogs were led by Ki-Ki Moore with 14 points, while Rosie Moult recorded six rebounds. Fresno State shot 14-30 (.467) from the field and recorded 26 points in the paint.
Each team would score a basket in the first minute of the second half, but the Bulldogs followed that up with seven straight to extend the lead to 21, 39-18. A three-point field goal by Kaitlyn Mileto would be the first of the game for the Cowgirls to make it 39-21 with 15:40 in the game. That would start a 10-2 run for Wyoming to try and cut into the lead making it 41-28 at the under 12 media timeout. Five straight points from Bree Farley got the lead back to 18, 46-28, which was answered with five of the next seven from the Cowgirls making it a 15-point game, 48-33. A basket by Farley would lead to the Bulldogs scoring 9 of 13 to put the lead back to 20, 57-37. Wyoming would continue to battle back as they went on a 7-2 run making it 59-44 with 4:22 left in the game. The teams scored only five points in the final minutes of the game as the Bulldogs went on to the 61-47 victory.
The Cowgirls will return home as they host the league leading San Diego State Aztecs, on Wednesday, Feb. 20. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. Live stats can be followed on www.gowyo.com.
