Oct. 29, 2012
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team opened up the 2012-13 exhibition season with an impressive 78-53 victory over the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers, on Monday night, in Laramie.
Three Cowgirls finished the evening in double figures led by senior Chaundra Sewell. She recorded a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds while shooting 6-9 from the field. Ashley Sickles and Kayla Woodward each chipped in 15 points in 25 minutes of play. Newcomer Fallon Lewis brought down six boards in her first action and Kaitlyn Mileto had a team high five assists. Wyoming shot 29-63 (.460) from the field and out rebounded the Tigers, 51-28.
Dakota Wesleyan was led by Elizabeth Lamb who recorded a team high 19 points as she shot 5-7 from the three-point line. Celeste Beck added 12 points while Kim Johnson had a team high five rebounds. The Tigers were 18-54 (.333) from the field.
"It was fun to come out and play tonight," said head coach Joe Legerski. "We were able to show that we improved our depth. All three point guards, Alison, Chelan and Marquelle had good showings in their first game. We could rest everyone and play with high energy. Everyone contributed and did what they could for the victory. This was a tough match up when you play an opponent that has the ability to shoot from the three. It requires your four and five players to play on the perimeter which puts some pressure on them. We got off to a great start and really got the crowd into it."
The Cowgirls started off quickly as they scored the first 12 straight points to begin the game. A three-point field goal by Amanda Hart with 14:54 on the clock finally got Dakota Wesleyan on the board. Wyoming answered with another 7-0 run to give them a double-figure lead, 20-3. The Tigers battled back and closed the gap to nine, 31-22, over a five minute stretch with a 19-9 run of their own. UW would regroup and close out the half with nine unanswered points to take a 40-22 lead into the lockerroom.
Out of the break, the Tigers scored the first bucket with a jumper from Kim Johnson. Wyoming went on another long scoring run with 14 straight points sparked by an Ashley Sickles three point play, which gave them a 54-24 advantage. Two straight three-point baskets by Dakota Wesleyan ended the run to make the score 54-30. The teams traded a couple of baskets and then both went into a scoring drought. A layup from Johnson stopped it for the Tigers, while free throws by Fallon Lewis ended an almost six minute drought for UW. The scoring was almost even in the final five minutes of the game as the Cowgirls went on to the 78-53 victory.
Wyoming will play one final exhibition game before opening the regular season. They will host the Regis Rangers, on Monday, Nov. 5, at 7:00 p.m.
