Bowling Green's Three-Point Attack Sinks Lady Rebs

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Bowling Green knocked down 12 three-pointers, including eight in the first half, on the way to a 64-54 victory over UNLV in the consolation game of the Lady Rebel Round-Up on Sunday afternoon in the Cox Pavilion. The Lady Rebels dropped to 2-4 with the loss, while the Falcons improved to 3-2 on the season.
Alana Cesarz paced the Lady Rebels with 17 points, while Kelli Thompson added 13 points and nine rebounds. Réjane Vérin had a career-high 10 points in her first collegiate start. UNLV shot 36.8% (21of-57) for the game, was 4-of-14 from three-point range (28.6%) and 8-of-12 at the free throw line (66.7%). Though the Lady Rebels committed a season-low 16 turnovers, and three less then the Falcons, Bowling Green would finish with a 23-16 edge on points off turnovers. UNLV was also outrebounded by a 41-35 margin.
"I thought we fought really hard, we put a lot of effort into the second half defensively," said UNLV head coach Kathy Olivier. "We just can't allow so many three-point shots, and have to be a better job on rebounding next time."
UNLV scored the game's first four points, and went up 8-5 on a layup by Vérin at the 16:51 mark. The Lady Rebels would not score again for more then six minutes, with Bowling Green reeling off 12 straight during that stretch. That included a pair of treys, while Jillian Halfhill's layup made it a 20-10 game at the 11:06 mark. After UNLV scored four straight to close within six, the Falcons responded back with another trey. Bowling Green would eventually lead by as much as 13 in the first half, 32-19 on a layup from Chrissy Steffen. Cesarz scored the half's final four points to make it a 35-29 game.
The Lady Rebels again opened the second half with four straight points, cutting the lead to 35-33 on a Cesarz tip-in. UNLV then had chances to tie the game but came up short on its next two possessions. Bowling Green then went on a 13-0 run over the next a 3:42 span. A three-pointer from Alexis Rogers capped the run at 48-33 with 13:27 on the clock. Thompson led a UNLV rally in the final minutes, scoring five straight points to cut an 11-point edge to six, 57-51 with 3:31 to play. Bowling Green countered with a 7-0 run of its own to seal the victory.
Jasmine Matthews finished with 16 points and four treys to pace Bowling Green. Danielle Havel added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Steffen chipped in 11. The Falcons shot 39% (23-of-59) for the game, was 12-of-31 from three-point range for 38.7%, and 6-of-8 at the free throw line for 75%.
UNLV will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 1, when it will play in the ASU Classic, hosted by Arizona State in Tempe. The Lady Rebels open play in the four-team field against Dayton, with the game starting 25 minutes after the conclusion of the Arizona State-Binghamton game that starts at 12 pm. Sunday's games will start at 11 am and 1:30 pm (PST).
