Women's Hoops Overpowers USC, 80-46

Nov. 30, 2012

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior guard Courtney Clements scored a game-high 25 points and the Aztec women's basketball team cruised to an 80-46 victory over USC on Friday at Viejas Arena.

SDSU drained a season-best 32 field goals on 69 attempts (46.4 percent) to help raise its record to 4-2 on the season, while the Women of Troy connected on just 18 of 56 shots (32.1 percent) to slip to 3-3 overall.

In addition to Clements, who topped the 20-point barrier for the third time in the last four games, the Aztecs received double-digit scoring totals from senior Chelsea Hopkins (13 pts.) and redshirt freshman Deajanae Scurry (11 pts.), while senior Gabrielle Clark posted career bests of six assists and three blocks.

SDSU outscored USC 36-14 in the paint and maintained a robust 48-29 rebounding advantage, including a 19-10 spread on the offensive glass. Senior Malia Nahinu led all players with nine caroms, while Hopkins and Scurry collected seven boards apiece.

The Women of Troy grabbed an early 7-4 lead until Clements tallied seven straight points, including a jumper with 15:53 remaining in the first half, to put the Aztecs ahead to stay. SDSU extended the margin to seven on three occasions, but consecutive layups by USC's Brianna Barrett and Christina Marinacci pulled the visitors back into contention at 23-20 with 5:50 left on the clock.

After a timeout, the Aztecs took charge, closing the period with a 15-4 blitz, sparked by a trio of 3-point baskets--two by Clements and another by Clark--to provide the host school a 38-24 cushion heading into the locker room.

SDSU kept firing on all cylinders in the second half, converting 16 of 32 shots from the floor, including a 3-for-5 clip from 3-point range, while limiting USC to just eight field goals. Following a Hopkins triple at the 5:26 mark, the Aztecs increased their lead to 72-42 and coasted for the remainder of the contest.

The Women of Troy were paced by Cassie Harberts' 15 points and five rebounds, while Destinie Gibbs added 11 points and three assists in the loss.

SDSU will take on its fourth Pac-12 Conference foe of the 2012-13 campaign when it travels to the Pacific Northwest to face Washington on Wednesday, Dec. 5, beginning at 7 p.m.
