Lady Rebels Suffer Road Loss At UTSA

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV was held under 50 points for the first time this year and shot just 29.8% from the floor on the way to a 61-46 setback at UTSA on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center. The Lady Rebels dropped to 3-6 on the year, while UTSA moved to 6-4, including 6-1 on its home court.

Turnovers were a key in the game, as while UNLV only committed one more then the Roadrunners (21-20), points off turnovers were 27-15 in favor of the home team. UTSA also took advantage of its deep bench, playing a total of 14 players in the game which would result in a 27-9 edge in points off the bench.

After UTSA increased a six-point halftime lead to nine on a Kamra King trey, the Lady Rebels made a run, scoring eight straight points. That included two three-point plays from Alana Cesarz, the second of which cut the margin to 30-29 with 15:45 to play. The Roadrunners responded though with 10 unanswered points, and went up 44-31 on a jumper at the 10:43 mark. UNLV closed the lead to nine points three times over the rest of the game, the last at 48-39 at the 6:24 mark UTSA closed out the win with a 13-4 run, grabbing its largest lead of the afternoon at 61-43, before a UNLV trey accounted for the final score.

UNLV opened up the game with a 6-2 edge. With the game tied at 9-9, the Roadrunners reeled off 11 unanswered points, going ahead 20-9 on a three-point from King at the 7:42 mark. The lead was still in double-figures, 25-15, before the Lady Rebels scored the final four points of the half to go into halftime down 25-19.

Kelli Thompson led UNLV with 12 points, while Cesarz and Danielle Miller both added 10 each. The Lady Rebels finished the game making a season-low two three-point field goals (2-of-13, 15.4%). UNLV was also outrebounded by a 39-36 margin, but did post seven blocks.

UTSA was paced by King's 13 points. Simone Young added 11, with both players knocking down three treys each. Cori Cooper was the third player in double-figures with 10. UTSA shot 44.4% (24of-54) from the floor, was 6-of-19 (31.6%) from three-point range, and 7-of-15 at the line (46.7%).

UNLV now breaks for exams before returning to action on Dec. 19 when it hosts the three-day World Vision Classic in the Cox Pavilion. The Lady Rebels will open the event against Old Dominion in a first-round game at 5:30 pm. The six-team tournament also features Notre Dame, Kansas State, Texas A&M and Alabama A&M.
