Lady Rebels Suffer Road Loss To Highlanders

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (UNLVRebels.com) - UC Riverside used a 14-4 second half run to pull away from UNLV and hand the Lady Rebels an 82-66 loss in women's college basketball action on Saturday afternoon at SRC Arena. UNLV, hurt by poor free throw shooting (24-of-40 in the game) dropped to 4-9 on the season, while UCR improved to 7-4.
UNLV led only twice in the game, at 2-0 and 4-2. UC Riverside then reeled off 10 of the next 11 points, going up 12-5 on a Natasha Hadley jumper with 14:11 to play. After three straight points from the Lady Rebels, UCR responded with a 10-3 run. A three-pointer from Akilah Martin capped the run, making the score 22-11 with 11:28 left on the first half clock. The lead grew to as high as 13 in the first half, and UNLV would go into halftime trailing 37-27.
In the second half the Lady Rebels came out attacking the basket, earning five trips to the line in the first five minutes. They would go 1-of-2 on four of those five trips however, 6-of-10 overall. A free throw from Danielle Miller cutting the lead to 41-35 at the 15:22 mark. The Highlanders pushed the lead back to 10 twice. Four straight points brought UNLV back within 48-42 on a layup from Briana Charles. Following a UCR three-pointer, Alana Cesarz drained a jumper to bring UNLV within seven, 51-44 with 10:04 on the clock. UCR then knocked down back-to-back treys, starting the game-deciding 14-4 run. A pair of free throws from TreShont Nottingham made the score 65-48 with 6:16 to play. The closest UNLV came the rest of the way was 14 points, while UCR led by as much as 18.
Cesarz paced the Lady Rebels with her third 20+ point performance of the year, 21 points and eight rebounds. Kelli Thompson added 19 points, and that moved her past Sequoia Holmes (2005-09) into 10th place in career scoring at UNLV with 1,498 points. Miller also finished in double-figures with 10 points. The Lady Rebels were held to 31.3% shooting (20-of-64) for the game, and 2-of-16 from three-point range for 12.5%.
UCR was led by a pair of 20-point scorers, Hadley (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Nottingham (21 points). The Highlanders shot 54% (34-of-63) for the game, 6-of-12 from three-point range, and 8-of-13 at the free throw line.
The Lady Rebels close out the 2012 calendar year with a Monday afternoon contest on New Year's Eve at Santa Clara, tipping off at 1 pm.
