Cowgirl Basketball Welcomes New Mexico To Double A On Saturday

The Wyoming Cowgirl basketball team returns home for their only game of the week as they host the New Mexico Lobos. The game is set for Saturday, February 11, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Live stats can be followed or audio can be found on www.wyomingathletics.com. Fans are encouraged to wear pink to the game. The WBCA's Play 4Kay is an opportunity for a nation of coaches to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for research on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The official charity is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund in partnership with The V Foundation and Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
Wyoming is currently 9-12 overall and 5-3 in Mountain West play after a 51-47 overtime victory against UNLV on Saturday in Las Vegas. The Cowgirls are led by Chaundra Sewell who is averaging a team high 13.4 points and 8.9 rebounds. Freshman Kayla Woodward follows with 12.0 points and 5.5 rebounds, while junior Ashley Sickles is adding 11.4 points plus 6.1 rebounds per game,. As a team, they are shooting 444-1124 (.395) from the field and 98-361 (.271) from beyond the arc.
Sickles currently ranks sixth in minutes played, ninth in blocked shots, tenth in rebounding and 13th in scoring. Sewell is among the Top 15 in points, rebounds, assists, blocked shots and field goal percentage. In league games, Woodward is second in field goal percentage, third in scoring, sixth in rebounding, minutes played and free throw percentage, seventh in steals, eighth in three-point field goal percentage, 11th in three point field goals made and 12th in assists.
UNM enters the week 7-15 overall and 1-7 in conference action. Caroline Durbin averages a team high 15.5 points plus 3.9 rebounds per game. Porche Torrance is adding 10.8 points and a team leading 8.9 rebounds. They return two starters and eight letterwinners to a team that went 13-18 overall and 5-11 in the Mountain West a year ago.
This is the 64th meeting between the two teams. UNM leads the series 35-28. The last time the two teams met was January 14, 2012 as the Cowgirls earned a 52-50 win in Albuquerque. New Mexico is coached by Yvonne Sanchez who is in her first season as the head coach.
In conjunction with the game, the University of Wyoming Athletics Department is sponsoring the Eighth Annual Walk for Women. Along with the walk, a Silent Auction will be held with all proceeds from the event directly benefiting the Wyoming Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The walk will be held in the Arena Auditorium Concourse with registration set to begin at 10:30 a.m. The cost is $30 per person or $15 for youth (6th Grade and under) and $15 for UW Students.
