Beth Burns' Thursday Press Conference Quotes

Feb. 9, 2012

San Diego State Head Coach Beth Burns

Opening Statement:

"We're coming off a week where we just didn't play very well. We didn't play well in either road game and paid the price in a loss to TCU. We really are refocused and re-energized. We had a good blend of learning with video as well as getting some rest and getting ready for round two. This is going to be maybe as exciting a game as we'll have in Viejas (Arena) this year. We are very competitive with UNLV. We recruit the same people and our game there [earlier this season] couldn't get much closer in that it was an overtime win. We're both coming into the game off a loss, so you're going to see desperation on both sides. We're the only team in the league that controls its destiny and we can't be swept. If we take care of our business, then we're going to be the Mountain West champions and we understand that. By the same token, they can't fall another game behind and they understand that. It will be competition at its best and is only fitting that the late, great Kay Yow once said, `Competiveness greatness is being great when the competition is at the highest.' It's especially cool for me that this is Kay's game. It means so much, because it's touched so many lives and in her name, we've been able to raise millions of dollars to get rid of breast cancer. We'll be wearing our pink (uniforms), thanks to a generous gift by Aztec Jane Haggerty, in honor of her late husband Robert. We'll have on our pink uni's and the first 500 fans will get an Aztec `Play for Kay' t-shirt. If you're going be here, come help us out at 2 p.m. on Saturday. It's going to be a great game."

On the team having to win the conference to make the NCAA tournament:

"We can't operate any other way. Ourselves and Vegas are the only two teams that have wins (I think) over top-25 opponents in the non-conference season. The only way that you can get beyond that is if there was maybe a San Diego State-UNLV championship (game) in the (Mountain West) tournament. Whoever loses may get a bid. Beyond that, it will be one hurdle to win the league, but I don't know if that will guarantee us of anything other than obviously a good seed and good position to win the (MW) tournament."
