Sanford Picks Up Player Of The Week Award

Feb. 20, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - For the fourth time this season, UNLV's Lenita Sanford was named the Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week the league office announced on Monday. That ties Sanford for the most MW weekly honors in school history, along with Constance Jinks, who was named four times in the 2001-02 season.

A 6-3 senior and native of Inglewood, Calif., Sanford is finally back to full health after missing three games and five starts with a knee injury. She showed last week why she was one of the top players in the league prior to her injury after posting back-to-back double-doubles to lead the Lady Rebels to a pair of home victories.

Her biggest impact came against TCU on Feb. 15 in a 55-54 Lady Rebel victory. UNLV had just three points in the first 11 minutes of the contest, and trailed TCU by a 13-3 score. Sanford then took over the game, scoring back-to-back baskets that would key a 21-4 run by UNLV to end the first half. Over that nine minute run to end the half, Sanford scored 12 points while connecting on 6-of-7 from the floor, grabbed five rebounds, blocked two shots and came up with two steals. For the game, Sanford scored a team-high 19 points on 8-of-16 shooting and collected a game-high and career-high tying 13 rebounds. She also posted three blocks and two steals.

In a 65-60 win over New Mexico on Feb. 18, Sanford finished with 12 points on 5-of-10 shooting and added a game-high 11 rebounds. That went along with her three steals, two assists and one block. For the week, she averaged 15.5 points, 12 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.0 blocks per contest. She also shot 50% from the floor.

UNLV, 19-8 on the season and 7-4 in MW play, returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 22, with a road contest at Boise State in Boise, Idaho with a 6 pm (PT) start.
