March 5, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV's Kelli Thompson ended the regular season the way she began it, earning Mountain West Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week honors, the league office announced on Monday. Thompson, who was the solo winner of the award on Nov. 14, picks up her second honor of the season and third in her career. This is the sixth week this season UNLV has had a Player of the Week honor, tying with San Diego State for most in the league.

Thompson, a 6-0 junior forward and native of Compton, Calif., scored a team-high 21 points to lead UNLV past Colorado State on February 29 by a 53-48 score in a battle for second place and the second seed in the MW Tournament. With her third straight 20+ point performance, she finished the game 7-of-12 from the floor, and added two assists, two rebounds and one steal. Her 12 first-half points, including eight in the final six minutes of the first half, sparked UNLV to a 12-point halftime lead, and she kept up her scoring in the second half to help the Lady Rebels keep at least a two possession lead for the entire second half until the final 10 seconds. Thompson leads UNLV in scoring this season with 13.6 points per game, and is ranked eighth in the Mountain West.

UNLV finished the regular season with a 22-8 record, and 10-4 in the MW to place second. The Lady Rebels open play in the 2012 Conoco MW Championships on Wednesday, March 7 at 6:05 pm against seventh-seed New Mexico in the Thomas & Mack Center.
