Lady Rebels Open MW Tournament Thursday
March 10, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
The UNLV women’s basketball team finished the regular season tied for fourth place in the Mountain West, and will be the fourth seed in this week's Reese's MW Women’s Basketball Championships, which will be held at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas from March 12-16.
For the second straight year, the Lady Rebels (12-18, 8-8) will open the tournament with a quarterfinal matchup against New Mexico, as UNLV will face the No. 5 seed Lobos (16-13, 8-8) on Thursday, March 14 at 2:30 pm. The winner of Thursday's game will advance to the semifinal round on Friday, March 15, and a matchup against the winner of the No. 1 San Diego State-First Round winner (Air Force vs. Nevada, Reno) contest. The first round game on Tuesday, all four quarterfinals games on Thursday and the two semifinal contests on Friday will all be available on the Mountain West Network through TheMWC.com thanks to a live webstream of the contests. The championship game on Saturday, March 16, will be carried live on the CBS Sports Network.
This will be the sixth meeting all-time in MW Tournament play between UNLV and the Lobos, New Mexico holding a 3-2 edge. That includes last year's contest, a 61-58 upset by the seventh-seed UNM squad over second-seed UNLV. New Mexico had been the higher seed in all four previous meetings. UNLV pulled off quarterfinal round upsets of the Lobos in the 2000 tournament as a fifth seed 52-50, and a 57-45 win as the sixth seed in the 2006 tournament. New Mexico's other two wins came in 2005, a 70-67 semifinal victory, and an 80-52 win by the third-seed Lobos in the 2007 quarterfinals.
The Lady Rebels are 6-7 in their first game of the tournament, which for the first eight years of the conference was their quarterfinal contest, before three years of a double-bye system, and is 6-4 in the quarterfinals as well. UNLV is 2-3 all-time as the higher seed in the MW Tournament.
This is the Lady Rebels' second time as a No. 4 seed in the MW Tournament. The previous time was in 2002, when UNLV knocked off fifth-seed Utah and upset top-seeded Colorado State to reach its first MW championship game, before falling to BYU. This will be the third time UNLV has played the fifth seed in the tournament, as an eighth-seeded UNLV squad lost to fifth-seeded Utah in the 2011 First Round.
Fifth-year head coach Kathy Olivier is 2-4 all-time with UNLV in the MW Tournament, while the Lady Rebels have an 8-13 (.381) tournament record, which ranks fifth among league members. UNLV has advanced to the championship game once (2002), and has six semifinal appearances in the 13-year history of the league.
The tournament starts with the first round on Tuesday, March 12 at 7:30 pm. Quarterfinal action begins on Thursday, March 14 (12, 2:30, 6 and 8:30 pm), the semifinals are on Friday, March 15 (12, 2:30 pm) with the championship slated for Saturday, March 16 at 7 pm. The winner of the tournament will receive the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
