LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
The UNLV Lady Rebels basketball team (22-9) earned a spot in the 2012 Women's National Invitation Tournament, announced by the WNIT Selection Committee Monday evening. UNLV will travel to Moraga, Calif., and play the Saint Mary's Gaels (21-10) on Thursday night in McKeon Pavilion. Game time will be announced by WNIT officials on Tuesday, March 13.
The Lady Rebels, who finished second in the Mountain West regular season with a 10-4 mark, earned an automatic berth into the 64-team tournament after San Diego State was the lone MW squad to be selected to the NCAA Tournament after winning the conference's regular-season and tournament titles.
UNLV and SMC enter the 64-team field as two of 36 teams with 20 or more wins this season. This will be the Gaels third consecutive and fourth overall trip to the WNIT while it is the first for the Lady Rebels since the 2005-06 campaign. UNLV has made nine appearances in the WNIT and own an overall record of 9-10. The Scarlet and Gray made four straight trips to the tourney from 2003-06.
The Gaels finished fourth overall in the West Coast Conference with an 11-5 record.
In head-to-head action, UNLV has won both meetings between the two programs. The Lady Rebels won the initial meeting 68-56 in Las Vegas on Nov. 23, 2002. The last encounter, an 89-57 UNLV triumph, occurred on Jan. 3, 2004.
