Hopkins, Clements Garner WBCA All-Region VII Honors

- San Diego State seniors Chelsea Hopkins (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Courtney Clements (Long Beach, Calif.) were among four players named to the WBCA All-Region VII Team, as announced Tuesday by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA). With their selections, Hopkins and Clements join an exclusive list of 52 candidates who will be considered for the 2013 WBCA All-America Team. The 10-member squad will be revealed Saturday, April 6 at the NCAA Women's Final Four in New Orleans, La.

Hopkins and Clements have led the Aztecs to a 26-6 record, highlighted by their second straight Mountain West regular-season championship. The 26 victories are tied for the most in school history and included a remarkable 17-game winning streak.

Hopkins, who earned Mountain West Player of the Year honors and was a first-team all-MW pick, leads the nation with an amazing four triple doubles and ranks eighth in assists. The 5-8 point guard also earned a spot on the MW all-defensive and all-tournament teams and has logged 27 double-digit scoring performances in 32 games. In addition, Hopkins has posted double figures in rebounds 11 times and assists on eight occasions. For the season, she is averaging 13.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, 6.8 assists and 2.3 steals.

During the MW tournament, Hopkins averaged nearly a triple-double with 11.0 points, 11.7 rebounds and 9.0 assists in three games. Against New Mexico in the semifinals, she established a MW tournament record with a career-high 14 assists, which marked the third-highest total in a single game in league history. Then in the finals vs. Fresno State in the finals, Hopkins set a MW championship game record with a personal-best 15 rebounds.

Clements, meanwhile, collected her second consecutive All-Region VII honor after leading the Aztecs in scoring with 17.5 points per game thus far during the 2012-13 campaign, which ranks second in the MW. The 6-0 guard, who also received first-team all-MW distinction and landed on the all-MW tournament team, ranks among the top 10 league leaders in 3-point field-goals made (3rd - 2.1/gm), 3-point field-goal percentage (7th - (.360)) and steals (9th - 1.7/gm). In addition, she finished second in MW conference play with a .872 free-throw percentage.

For the season, Clements has recorded 30 double-digit scoring efforts in 32 games and has totaled 20 more points 13 times, including a career-high tying 29 points against New Mexico on Feb. 27. In three games at the MW tournament, she averaged 15.0 points and 4.8 rebounds, while totaling seven assists, six blocks and four steals.

The Aztecs will be making their fourth postseason appearance in the last five years on Wednesday when they play host to UC Santa Barbara in the first round of the WNIT at Viejas Arena. Opening tip is set for 7 p.m. PT.
