SDSU's Clements Tabbed Honorable Mention AP All-American
March 27, 2012
SAN DIEGO - The Associated Press announced Tuesday that San Diego State junior guard Courtney Clements (Long Beach, Calif.) has been named an honorable mention All-American. She is the first Aztec so honored since the AP began the awards for women's basketball in 1995.
Clements is the fourth SDSU player to be tabbed an All-American in program history. She joins recent standout Jené Morris, who was a honorable mention State Farm Coaches' All-American in both 2009 and 2010, and Falisha Wright, who was a two-time honorable mention pick by the coaches in both 1993 and 1994. Chana Perry was the Aztecs' first All-American, earning first-team accolades in 1989.
Clements was named the 2012 Mountain West Player of the Year, becoming the first Aztec to earn the award in the conference's 13-year history. She led the league in scoring with 17.4 points per game and also ranked first in MW-only outings with a 17.9 average. The first-team all-conference pick scored 20 or more points 13 times, had at least 17 in 21 contests and was not held to less than 10 points in consecutive outings in 2011-12. She also was tops in the Mountain West in free-throw shooting, knocking down 40 of 42 vs. league foes (95.2 percent), while her season percentage of 86.9 at the stripe is third in SDSU history.
The 6-foot guard, who also is a candidate for All-America honors from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association, was tabbed to the league championship all-tournament team and was a three-time conference player of the week. Clements is the first player from the Mountain West to be recognized by the AP since 2010.
The San Diego State women's basketball team completed one of the finest campaigns in school history in 2011-12, compiling a 25-7 overall record, winning both the Mountain West regular-season and tournament titles and advancing to the NCAA championships.
