April 27, 2012
SAN DIEGO - Aztec women's basketball head coach Beth Burns will receive an honorary membership to the Phi Kappa Phi honor society on Friday at an afternoon ceremony at the Parma Payne Goodall Alumni Center on campus. Burns is being recognized by the organization for her commitment to both student-athletes and San Diego State.
Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest and largest all-discipline honor society. Its mission is to promote the pursuit of excellence in all fields of higher education and to recognize outstanding achievement by students, faculty and others through election to membership and through various awards for distinguished achievement. San Diego State's Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 96 was founded in 1965, and membership is by invitation only to the top 7.5 percent of second-semester juniors and the top 10 percent of seniors and graduate students.
Burns recently completed the seventh year of her second stint and 15th year overall as head coach at SDSU. She has led the Aztecs to a trip to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen, three NCAA tournament appearances (2009, 2010, 2012) and two conference regular-season (2009, 2012) and tournament titles (2010, 2012) since returning to The Mesa in 2005. Burns is the all-time winningest coach in Aztec women's basketball history, boasting 268 career victories at SDSU.
