On Saturday, May 5, UNLV women's basketball Head Coach Kathy Olivier partnered once again with the Southern Nevada Affiliate of Susan G. Komen to kick-off the 17th annual Race for the Cure. As an honorary chair, Olivier was accompanied by Mayor Carolyn Goodman, Channel 8 news anchor Paula Francis and Congresswoman Shelley Berkley at the event, which was held in fabulous downtown Las Vegas at the Fremont Street Experience. More than 15,000 people packed the streets in an effort to raise money for cancer prevention and research. Walkers and runners were able to participate in the 5K run or the 1-mile fun walk.

The Lady Rebels' participation in the Race for the Cure is in continuation of their efforts every February with the WBCA "Play4Kay" initiative. The mission of the initiative, which was brought to life in 2007, is to bring together a nation of coaches and teams raising breast cancer awareness on the basketball court, across campuses, in communities and beyond.
