Clements Makes Atlanta Dream Final Roster
May 23, 2013
SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State star Courtney Clements (Long Beach, Calif.) was one of three rookies to make the Atlanta Dream after the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) club finalized its 11-player roster on May 22.
Clements, who was signed to a training camp contract on May 1, joins Alex Bentley, the team's No. 1 draft choice (No. 13) from Penn State and Annie Marie Armstrong, the club's third-round selection (No. 31) out of Georgia.
In two exhibition games with the Dream, Clements saw extensive action, averaging 18.0 points and 4.5 rebounds, while shooting 61.9 percent from the field (13-21) in 48 minutes.
Clements received honorable mention All-America recognition and first-team all-Mountain West accolades in each of the past two seasons at SDSU, finishing with 1,495 points in an Aztec uniform, which ranks fifth in program history. The 6-foot guard scored a team-best 17.9 points per game during the 2012-13 campaign, which was good for second in the conference, and posted double-digit scoring totals in 32 of 34 games, surpassing the 20-point plateau on 14 occasions.
Clements becomes just the second Aztec to make a WNBA roster after Jené Morris was drafted 11th overall by the Indiana Fever in 2010, playing 25 games for the club that season, followed by a stint with the Tulsa Shock in 2012. In addition, Clements is one of just two players from current Mountain West Conference schools in the WNBA at the start of the upcoming season, joining the San Antonio Silver Stars' Becky Hammon (Colorado State), a six-time All-Star who has scored over 5,000 points in her 13-year career.
Under the guidance of second-year head coach Fred Williams, the Dream opens their 2013 campaign on Saturday, May 25, at home against Tulsa. Atlanta returns four starters from last year's squad that finished third in the WNBA's Eastern Conference with a 19-15 record before dropping its first-round playoff series against Indiana.
