A Day In the Life of Mia Bell
Monday, June 4th
Finally, my favorite time of the year is here – summer time. The sun is blazing, the pools are open, but yet all of the fun starts in the gym. It is the first place I go when I wake up, and the last place I visit before I go home. Yes, it is officially work season and I couldn’t be more excited. I look forward to each and every day. Today went a little something like this:
I woke up with one thought on my mind. That thought fueled me throughout the day and my fire was lit. First stops were weights with Coach Kabo, then rehab with Stacy, our athletic trainer. After dealing with all of the injuries that I’ve had in my career, the first priority is to strengthen my body. It is my first step in having a successful season.
After eating a quick lunch and stopping by the office to bug Coach Whip, I head to the gym to get a basketball workout in. Being in the gym drives me even more, and that constant thought continues. While in the gym, the focus is to improve my overall game. Preparing me for game-speed situations: if I call “Out” and the post high-hedges on the wing on the on-ball pick, I will be able to split it flawlessly; if we are running a down pick for me and my defender decides to shoot the gap, I will flare and hit the baseline jumper with perfection. I can’t realistically prepare for every situation, but if I master the skills required, no situation will take me by surprise.
Later at night, I come back in the gym to get some extra shots up. This is my ultimate favorite part of the day. No distractions. Just me, the ball, and the basket. This is my confidence builder - you never know when you need to hit that game winning shot. When the time comes, I will be ready.
As my night comes to a close, the thought runs rapidly through my head before I fall asleep. I can see it. I can almost feel it. It’s the only thing that matters: winning the Mountain West Conference Championship. I envision it every night.
This morning I woke up and that thought fuels me through another day. Work season continues…
