Lobo Women's Hoops To Face Challenging Opportunities In Non-Conference
June 18, 2013
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A quick glance at Lobo Women’s Basketball’s non-conference schedule and several adjectives jump out at you. “Challenging”, “tough” and “competitive” are some of the most appropriate for Coach Sanchez and company’s first months of the upcoming 2013-14 season.
“It was important to our program to raise our RPI and help raise the RPI of the conference. We walked the fine line between a challenging schedule and a grueling one. Our non-conference schedule will give us some great opponents and challenge our team while continuing some of our program’s tremendous rivalries. It also brings some high-caliber programs to The Pit, which is exciting for our great fan base,” said Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez.
Those challenges include perennial top five program, Stanford, along with a handful of other programs who were ranked or received votes last season. Those teams include Texas Tech, Texas, Colorado and Arkansas.
The Lobos will continue long-standing regional rivalries with games versus New Mexico State (67 previous meetings), Texas Tech (16 previous meetings) and Colorado (13 previous meetings).
The schedule also provides fans with plenty of opportunities to catch some New Mexico Women’s Basketball action in The Pit. The Cherry & Silver will play nine non-conference home games, including a pair of exhibitions. The month of November alone will see the Lobos take to Bob King Court for a total of eight times.
2013-14 unofficially kicks off with a pair of home exhibitions versus New Mexico Highlands and Western New Mexico on Saturday, November 2 and Tuesday, November 5 respectively. Those two games versus in-state opponents are the prelude to the regular season opener. The Lobos officially kick off the 2013-14 season by hosting Loyola Marymount on Saturday, November 9.
After welcoming the Lions to The Pit to begin the season, UNM will take to the road and head to Lubbock to face Texas Tech on Wednesday, November 13.
The team will return from their one-game road trip to begin a slew of home contests against Texas, Colorado and Wisconsin-Milwaukee as a build up to the annual Thanksgiving Tournament. The Longhorns will pay a visit to Albuquerque on Tuesday, November 19 followed by the Buffaloes on Saturday, November 23. Wisconsin-Milwaukee will come to the Duke City on Tuesday, November 26.
This year’s Thanksgiving Tournament will be held on Friday, November 29 and Saturday, November 30. Coach Sanchez and the Lobos will face Binghamton first with the rest of the field including Arkansas and Southeast Missouri.
The one and only home non-conference game in December will be against Rio Grande Rival, New Mexico State, on Saturday, December 7. The Lobos will then close the non-conference schedule with visits to each coast. On Monday, December 16, New Mexico will face reigning 13-time defending Pac-12 champion Stanford in Palo Alto, Calif. UNM will then finish their non-conference slate by playing in a tournament in Florida, which is hosted by Miami on December 28 and 29.
