The new faces of the 2012-13 Lady Rebel women's basketball program made their first introduction to the Southern Nevada community this past week. Freshmen Amie Callaway, Jehiah Cook, Rejane Verin, Jazzmeen Williams and sophomore transfer Aley Rodhe were honorary assistant coaches for a girls under-10 league hosted by the City of Henderson on July 12 at the Downtown Rec Center.

Arrangements had been coordinated in advance with Recreation Program Coordinator Edward Saiz and UNLV alum and proud supporter of the Lady Rebels, Phil Thompson. The under-10 athletes were not aware in advance that the Lady Rebels would be attending their game and sitting on the bench with them, so everyone was pleasantly surprised when the newcomers arrived along with Lady Rebel veterans Kelli Thompson and Alana Cesarz.

All UNLV athletes alternated between having the opportunity to work with the four youth teams playing that evening, assisting their designated team with pre-game warm-ups, sharing encouraging advice and showing good sportsmanship. The coaches and parents for the "Rockstars", the "Rockstarz", the "Rebels" and the "Blue Jays" were very excited and appreciative for the surprise visit.

The UNLV Women's Basketball program looks forward to continuing the developing relationship with the City of Henderson.
