Aug. 7, 2012
ALBUQUERQUE - Head Coach Yvonne Sanchez and the University of New Mexico women's basketball program have released the non-conference portion of their schedule for the upcoming 2012-13 season. It features eleven home games (including two exhibition matches) in their first 15 games of the season, which includes the program's annual New Mexico Thanksgiving Tournament.
"It's definitely not easy. It sets up pretty well for a team with a lot of new faces and should give our fans some exciting games," said Coach Sanchez.
Coach Sanchez and company will begin play with a pair of exhibition matches against Northern New Mexico (October 30th) and Eastern New Mexico (November 3rd) both of which will be played inside the friendly confines of The Pit.
The regular season officially kicks off with the Lobos hosting Northern Arizona on Friday, November 9th at 7 p.m. The opener against the Lumberjacks is the start of a two-and-a-half span of seven straight home dates for the silver and cherry.
Six days after the regular season opener, the Lobos will host Texas Tech on November 15th in one of UNM's seven return dates from last season. The other rematches being Houston Baptist, Houston, Arizona, UTEP and Rio Grande rival New Mexico State among others. The Texas Tech Lady Raiders of the Big XII are also part of a group of four BCS-conference opponents included in this non-conference schedule with the others being Georgia (SEC), Arizona (PAC-12) and Colorado (PAC-12).
Georgia is part of this year's Thanksgiving Tournament field. The Lady Bulldogs will be joined by Saint Bonaventure, North Texas and the host New Mexico Lobos. The Tournament will be played on November 23rd and 24th.
After another home contest versus Weber State on Tuesday, November 27th, New Mexico will finally hit the road for a date at the University of Houston on Friday, November 30th. A pair of home games against Cal State Fullerton and Arizona follows the one-game trip to the lone star State.
The final three games of non-conference play will all be played on the road beginning with a trip south for the Rio Grande Rivalry at New Mexico State on December 18th in Las Cruces. The Lobos will then play at UTEP two days later before ending their non-conference slate of games at Colorado in Boulder on December 29th.
