Oct. 2, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's basketball team is inviting fans to a free fan event on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 10:30 am at the Mendenhall Center on the campus of UNLV.
Hosted by fifth-year head coach Kathy Olivier and her staff, the annual "Rise 'N' Shine" invites fans to celebrate the beginning of the 2012-13 season by getting a glimpse of the new team in action. That will include the first chance to meet freshmen Amie Callaway, Jehiah Cook, Rejane Verin and Jazzmeen Williams, while some in attendance will have the opportunity to join the team on the court. The Lady Rebels will have an open Q&A session as well as a chance for fans to take pictures and get autographs from the players and coaches at the conclusion of the event.
"Rise 'N' Shine is going to be a great chance for our season ticket holders and the local community to get their first look at our 2012-13 team," said Olivier. "All our fans will have a great opportunity to see our team in action for the first time as well as the chance to connect and interact with our newcomers and returning players. With five new players on this year's team, it's going to be a different look for us on the court, and we hope people like what they see on Oct. 20."
The Lady Rebels are coming off their best season in almost a decade, after a 22-10 record that earned the first postseason trip (WNIT) for UNLV since the 2005-06 season. UNLV also claimed its first-ever top two regular season finish in the Mountain West with a 10-4 record. Though four seniors graduated, UNLV does return a backcourt featuring two all-conference guards, seniors Kelli Thompson and Mia Bell.
Among the highlights of the 2012-13 home schedule season is the season-opener and Rebel Reunion night against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 9, a home contest with Pac-12 rival Arizona on Nov. 13, and two holiday tournaments. The Lady Rebel Round-Up, on Thanksgiving weekend (Nov. 24-25), will feature Villanova, Bowling Green and Montana. UNLV will then host the World Vision Classic in a pre-Christmas event on Dec. 19-21. Highlighting that six-team event are two of the three teams to play for the last two NCAA titles, Texas A&M and Notre Dame, along with Kansas State, Old Dominion and Alabama A&M. UNLV's MW home slate starts on Jan. 9 against New Mexico.
