Oct. 26, 2012
LARAMIE, Wyo. -
Tenth year head coach Joe Legerski and Wyoming basketball team will open up the 2012-13 season early next week with their first of two exhibition games. They will host the Dakota Wesleyan Tigers, on Monday, Nov. 5. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Arena Auditorium. Live stats and audio can be found at www.wyomingathletics.com.
"We are definitely further along then we were a year ago," said head coach Joe Legerski. "The most impressive thing is how hard both the veterans and newcomers have come out and competed. We are very pleased with the group of newcomers and knowing the experience everyone else has under their belt. We are excited to get the season going."
Wyoming returns all five starters and ten letterwinners to a team that finished with a 12-17 overall record and a 7-7 mark in Mountain West play. Of those returning players, they are led by seniors Chaundra Sewell and Ashley Sickles, plus sophomore Kayla Woodward. A Second Team All-MW selection a year ago, Sewell averaged a team leading 13.7 points and 8.8 rebounds in 29 contests. In league games, she averaged 14.9 points and 8.5 rebounds. Woodward averaged 12.1 points and 5.5 rebounds on her way to earning Third Team All-MW honors in her first season. Sickles played in all 29 games during the season while adding 11.3 points and six boards. She was selected to the Honorable Mention All-MW team. The other two returning starters Chelan Landry and Kaitlyn Mileto will also factor in to the Cowgirls success. Mileto started in every game during her freshman campaign and averaged 9.1 points, while Landry chipped in 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals per game.
Other key contributors back for the Cowgirls are senior Brenna Freeze, junior Kaylee Hoffman and sophomores Mina Geric, Alison Gorrell and Jordan Sibrel. They also welcome five newcomers with Aubry Boehme, Marquelle Dent, Whitney Gordon, Fallon Lewis and Fatima Thiam.
The Tigers return four starters and eight letterwinners that went 16-15 overall and 7-13 in the Great Plains Conference a year ago. The Cowgirls and the Tigers have never met during the regular season. They are coached by Jason Christensen who is in his third season with the program.
