Bell To Redshirt 2012-13 Season

Nov. 7, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - UNLV senior point guard Mia Bell, a Third Team All-Mountain West selection last season, will redshirt the 2012-13 season, Lady Rebel head coach Kathy Olivier announced on Wednesday. Bell will take the year off to further recover from surgery done this summer on her knee that included meniscus removal and to take care of a microfracture in the knee as well.

"Mia's coming off her best year as a Lady Rebel, and there's no doubt we will miss her scoring, her defense and her leadership," said Olivier. "She's now focusing on helping us as a leader off the court while also serving as a mentor for our newcomers."

The Las Vegas native turned in a career-best season in 2011-12. She tied for second in the conference in assists per game (4.0), was fourth in steals (1.94) and 17th in scoring (9.2), which was also third-highest on the team. Bell hit four game-winning shots on the year, including in upset wins over Kansas State and Fresno State as well as a buzzer-beater at UC Santa Barbara.

The Lady Rebels were picked to finish third in the 2012-13 MW preseason poll after coming off a 22-10 season and the first postseason trip in six years, a run that was partly fueled by three senior starters. With the loss of Bell for the year, UNLV's roster will now feature senior Kelli Thompson, a second-team all-conference pick, while the other 10 players have a combined one career collegiate start.

The home opener for the Lady Rebels is Friday against UC Santa Barbara at 7 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center.
