Friday Night Opener
Nov. 8, 2012
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -
Friday’s season opener for the UNLV women's basketball team is a rematch of a thrilling contest from a year ago, as the Lady Rebels scored on a shot at the buzzer for a two-point road win at UC Santa Barbara last December. The tip-off for Friday is set for 7 pm in the Thomas & Mack Center.
The Gauchos come into the Thomas & Mack Center looking to avenge that loss, but both teams will have different looks from their squads a year ago. Most notably, UNLV will have just one starter on the floor from last year’s squad. The Lady Rebels thought they would have the second-most experienced backcourt in the nation returning for the 2012-13 season, but with Mia Bell now redshirting the year, UNLV has quickly become one of the youngest teams in the nation. Outside of returning three-year starting guard Kelli Thompson, the rest of the Lady Rebel roster has a combined total of one career start.
UNLV is also expecting to have three underclassmen in the starting lineup. UCSB meanwhile brings back three starters from last year’s NCAA team. UNLV has won five straight season openers, while UCSB has lost its last three.
