Nov. 14, 2012

LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) - Two players, Diamond Major from Las Vegas and Jazmyne Bartee from Arizona, have signed national letters of intent to play for the UNLV women's basketball team starting in the fall of 2013-14, head coach Kathy Olivier announced on Wednesday.

Major, a 5-9 wing, is the first player from Las Vegas to sign with UNLV since Mia Bell in 2008. She played her first three years at Bishop Gorman HS before transferring to Las Vegas High for her senior season, and is rated No. 56 at her position by ESPN HoopGurlz. While playing for the Gaels, she averaged 5.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists en route to helping them to the state championship game as a junior. She also earned BGHS defensive player of the year and the Coaches' award her junior season. Major has played for the Vegas Elite club team as well.

"It is always great to get a highly rated local as we did in Diamond," said Olivier. "She has great energy and she's an overachiever in the classroom and on the court."

Bartee, a native of Chandler, Ariz., is a 6-1 center/froward for Chandler HS, runner-up in the state championships in 2011. The 43rd-ranked post player in the nation (ESPN HoopGurlz), Bartee earned second team all-state honors after averaging 7.0 points, 11.7 rebounds, 2.5 blocks and 1.3 steals per game. She was also named team Defensive Player of the Year and played in the Arizona Underclass All-State game in 2012.

"Jazmyne is a long post who is very active, and we love her athletic ability," said Olivier. "She is just going to make us even deeper inside and that's always a big advantage."
