Chelsea Hopkins Tabbed MW Player of the Week
Dec. 17, 2012
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State guard Chelsea Hopkins (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been named the Mountain West Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. With her award, the Aztec senior earned the third MW weekly honor of her career and first this season.
Hopkins narrowly missed out on a rare triple-double in SDSU's 73-56 road victory at Cal Poly on Sunday after finishing with a season-high 17 points to go along with 10 rebounds and nine assists. She also tied her career best with eight field goals on 14 attempts and came away with two steals in 39 minutes. Hopkins set the tone early in the game by scoring six of the team's first 10 points, as the Scarlet and Black built an insurmountable 40-27 lead by halftime.
With her performance, Hopkins, who was also selected as conference player of the week by College Sports Madness on Monday, completed the seventh double-double and 25th double-digit scoring effort in her career. She enters this week ranked second in the MW with 5.6 assists per game and fifth with 7.0 rebounds per contest.
Hopkins is the second Aztec to receive MW Player of the week recognition this year after fellow classmate Courtney Clements (Long Beach, Calif.) earned such distinction in consecutive weeks earlier this month.
SDSU (6-3) returns to the court on Wednesday, Dec. 19, when it entertains Fresno Pacific at Viejas Arena, starting at 5 p.m.
