Women's Hoops Set for Surf 'N Slam Classic

After a nine-day hiatus, the San Diego State women's basketball team opens the eighth annual San Diego Surf `N Slam Classic on Friday when it battles SMU starting at 5 p.m. PT in Viejas Arena.

-SDSU Head Coach Beth Burns: Burns (Ohio Wesleyan, 1979) is in the eighth year of her second stint as head coach at San Diego State. She led the Aztecs for eight seasons from 1989 to 1997, before returning in 2005. She has an overall head coaching record of 356-247 in 21 seasons, and she is 275-182 in her 16 campaigns at SDSU.
-SMU Head Coach Rhonda Rompola: Rompola (SMU, 1983) is in her 22nd season coaching at her alma mater and has compiled a career record of 338-255. During her tenure, Rompola has guided the Mustangs to seven NCAA tournament berths and four WNIT appearances. In additon, she has earned coach of the year honors on six occasions.
-Series History: SMU has captured all four previous meetings between the two schools.
-Up Next: SDSU will face either Harvard or No. 14 Oklahoma State on Sunday, Dec. 30. The consolation game gets underway at noon, while the championship final is set to tip off at 2 p.m.
