The University of New Mexico women's golf team finished in eighth place at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational. The Lobos started the final round in fifth, but struggled to a 34-over 322 today at the Golf Club at Vistoso (par 72, 6,250 yards) outside Tucson. UNM ended with a 54-hole total of 924 (300-302-322).

Host Arizona led wire-to-wire, taking the team title by 12 shots over top-ranked UCLA. The Wildcats ended at 851 (13 under).

"It was a whirlwind in the beginning," said Lobos head coach Jill Trujillo. "It was cold and windy and we didn't handle it very well. Our course management was not good at the start and we made some bad choices. We're knocked down, but I am confident that we will recover."

Today's 322 score is the highest by the Lobos since a 323 in the final round of the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Oct. 8, 2008.

Senior Rebecca Hellbom (75-72-82) and sophomore Sammi Stevens (74-77-78) were the Lobos' top finishers, tying for 26th at 13-over 229. Stevens had UNM's low round of the day, a 6-over 78, including a birdie on the final hole.

Junior Beth Buchner tied for 36th at 16-over 232 (75-76-81). Sophomore Manon De Roey came in at 238 (79-77-82), tying for 47th while sophomore Sofia Hoglund tied for 59th at 242 (76-85-81).

Arizona's Manon Gidali blitzed the field in the individual competition. She finished at 12-under 204 (67-66-71), seven shots better than her teammate, Margarita Ramos.

UNM did beat New Mexico State by 36 shots to earn 1.5 points in the Rio Grande Rivalry. UNM now has a 12.0-7.5 lead in the 2011-12 standings.

The Lobos' next tournament is Feb. 20-21 at the UNLV Spring Invitational in Boulder City, Nev.
