Feb. 21, 2012
The University of New Mexico women's golf team shot the second-best round of the day and moved up one spot to finish fourth at the UNLV Spring Invitational. Led by sophomore Manon De Roey's career-low 71, the Lobos fired a 9-over 297 today at the Cascata Golf Club (par 72, 6,272 yards) in Boulder City, Nev.
UNM completed 54 holes at 909 (45-over, 303-309-297), 37 shots behind Arizona (872). The Wildcats won their second straight tournament, 19 strokes better than host UNLV (891).
On a day when the average round was 79.15, the Lobos were superb. They played the final nine holes in a combined 1-over par.
"I certainly liked the way we played today," said head coach Jill Trujillo. "We didn't start out that well, but we stayed with it and played good golf down the stretch. That's what we're capable of doing."
De Roey had three birdies and two bogeys to tie her career low round of 71 accomplished twice as a freshman. De Roey also equaled her low 54-hole total of 223 (78-74-71) to tie for eighth, by far her highest finish in 17 career tournaments at UNM. She started the day in a tie for 25th.
Senior Rebecca Hellbom tied for 12th at 224 (72-76-76). She was 6 over on the round after 13 holes, but finished strong with birdies at 16 and 18.
Senior Sarah Salvo scrambled to a season-low 75 in a round that featured three birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey.
Arizona teammates Isabelle Boineau and Manon Gidali shared the individual title at 2-over 218.
The Lobos' next competition is March 5-6 at the Bruin Wave Invitational in Tarzana, Calif.
