March 5, 2012
The University of New Mexico women's golf team is in seventh place after two rounds of the Bruin Wave Invitational being played at the El Caballero Country Club (par 72) in Tarzana, Calif.
The Lobos have a 36-hole total of 47-over 623, which is 35 strokes behind co-host Pepperdine. After a solid opening-round 299, UNM was in third place in the 15-team field.
However, New Mexico dropped four spots in the standings after soaring to a 324 in the second round. That's the program's highest 18-hole total since a 326 in the final round of the 2008 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational.
In the first round, three Lobos shot 75 or better. In round two, UNM's lowest score was a 79 by senior Rebecca Hellbom and sophomore Sofia Hoglund. Senior Sarah Salvo and sophomores Manon De Roey and Sammi Stevens each shot 11-over 83.
No. 1 and 2 were particularly troublesome for the Lobos in the afternoon as they were a combined 14-over as a team on those two holes.
Hellbom is the top Lobo at 10-over 154 (75-79), tied for 19th. Salvo is tied for 34th at 156 (73-83) followed by De Roey at 157 (74-83), tied for 39th.
Stevens is tied for 47th at 160 (77-83) while Hoglund is tied for 54th at 163 (84-79).
San Diego State's Christine Wong has the individual lead at 3-under 141 (68-73).
The Lobos begin final round action Tuesday at 10:10 a.m. Mountain time.
