Rebels in Fifth After Two Rounds

– Fresh off a second-place finish at the UNLV Spring Invitational, the UNLV women’s golf team stands in fifth place after opening day action in the Third Annual Bruin/Wave Invitational.

Pepperdine leads the team race at +12, 11 strokes ahead of second place Oklahoma State (+23). Co-host UCLA is third at +27 while Mountain West rival San Diego State is fourth, two strokes ahead of the Rebels at +31.

Sophomore transfer Charlotte Brooks leads the Rebels after turning in rounds of 75 and 72, finishing the day at 3-over par and just six shots off the lead heading into Tuesday’s final round.

Christine Wang (San Diego State) leads the field and is one of only two players under par through two rounds, sitting at 3-under. Alina Ching (Pepperdine) is 1-under while teammate Grace Na stands in third at 1-over and Jayde Panos (Oklahoma State) at +2 and in fourth.

Reigning Mountain West Golfer of the Month Dana Finkelstein is in a four-way tie for 15th place at 9-over par after turning in rounds of 74 and 79. Classmate Mayko Chwen Wang is one stroke back from Finkelstein at 10-over. Wang recovered from an opening-round 80 to card a 2-over par 74 in round two.

Senior Bethany Calvo shot 77-78 for a +11 total in day one, tied with eight others in 25th place. Rounding out the UNLV starting five is Katerina Prorokova who is tied for 50th overall after rounds of 82 and 80.

Freshman Marguerite Swearingen, playing as an individual, is tied for 44th at 15-over par through two rounds after carding an 80-79.

Swearingen will be the first Rebel to tee off tomorrow, starting at 7:40 a.m. Brooks will round out the UNLV players with an 8:30 a.m. tee time.
