Stevens Ties for 3rd at Thompson Invitational

Final Results

Junior Sammi Stevens recorded the lowest 54-hole total of her career to finish in a tie for third place at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Kane'ohe, Hawai'i.

Stevens shot 73 today at the Kane'ohe Klipper course, ending with a career-best 217 (71-73-73) total. Her previous low score for three rounds was 218 at the 2011 Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque. Stevens is now the Lobos' top player with a season scoring average of 74.60.

Stevens finished four shots out of first that was claimed by Arizona's Manon Gidali (213). Ohio State's Amy Meier was second (215) while Patricia Garcia from Arizona tied Stevens for third.

As a team, the Lobos fell to seventh place with a 54-hole total of 57-over 921 (298-308-315). UNM was in fourth place in the 16-team field after the first round and in a tie for fifth after 36 holes.

No. 7 Arizona (875) led wire-to-wire to win the team championship by 25 shots over second place Ohio State (900).

The Lobos' high score of the tournament (315) came today and was again marked by difficulties on the back nine. UNM dropped 14 shots on holes 10 through 18 in the final round, and 38 in the tournament compared to half that total (19) on the front side.

After playing the first two rounds in just 5 over, junior Sofia Hoglund soared to an 83 in the final round. She finished in a tie for 28th at 232 (73-76-83).

The Lobos' top golfer entering the tournament, junior Manon De Roey never got untracked. She shot 79 today and finished at 233 (77-77-79), tying for 34th. De Roey entered the competition with a season scoring average of 74.38. However, she has a 77.71 average in seven rounds this spring.

Senior Beth Buchner finished at 239 (77-82-80), tying for 50th.

Freshman Ira Knopf tied for 83rd at 255 (83-82-90). Freshman Xenia Knopf, playing as an individual, came in with a 253 (83-79-91), tying for 81st.

The Lobos are off until March 31 when they participate in The Farms Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
