Rebels Tied for Sixth After Day One

– The UNLV women’s golf team opened up action at the second annual Battle at Rancho Bernardo with a +15, 303 team score at the par-72, Rancho Bernardo Inn Championship Golf Course.

The Rebels stand in a three-way tie for sixth, 10 strokes off the lead heading into the final round of the weather-shortened 36-hole event.

Tulane (+5) will open up the final round with a two-stroke advantage over Southern Cal and Arizona State. Pepperdine and Texas A&M are tied for fourth at +14, one stroke ahead California, Long Beach State and the Rebels.

The Green Wave also have the tournament’s top two individuals with Maribel Lopez Porras holding a one-shot lead over teammate Gemma Dryburgh at 3-under. Sophia Popov (Southern Cal) and Rika Park are tied for third at 1-under with a group of four golfers sitting at even par, including UNLV freshman Mayko Chwen Wang.

Wang carded three birdies in the first round, including two on par 5’s to total an even 72 on the day.

Classmate Dana Finkelstein started off with a bogey on the par-3 second and a double on the par-4 fifth, but rattled off 10 consecutive pars before a birdie on the par-4 16th moved her to 2-over on the day. Finkelstein will start round two in a six-way tie and just five shots off the leader.

Sophomore Katerina Prorokova carded two birdies to finish with a 6-over round of 78, sitting in a tie for 48th place. Senior Bethany Calvo (+7, 79) and junior Ellis Keenan (+9, 81) round out the UNLV lineup.

Tomorrow’s final round will kick off at 7:30 a.m. with UNLV represented in the first five groups
