March 20, 2012
The University of New Mexico women's golf team finished in 15th place at the rain-shortened Battle at Rancho Bernardo in San Diego. Starting the final round last in a competitive 16-team field, the Lobos shot a 311 today for a 36-hole total of 51-over 627 (316-311).
Playing at the Rancho Bernardo Inn Championship Course, 47th-ranked UNM finished 37 shots behind 3rd-ranked Southern Cal (590), which rallied for a 2-shot victory over No. 8 Arizona State (592).
The tournament featured nine teams ranked in the top-30 of the latest GolfStat.com poll.
The event was scheduled for 54 holes, but Sunday's first round was cancelled due to wet conditions.
For the second tournament in a row, Lobo senior Sarah Salvo led UNM. She tied for 22nd at 7-over 151 (74-77). Salvo was 7 over on her round after 13 holes, but picked up two shots over the final five holes, including a birdie on the par 5 9th.
Junior Beth Buchner tied for 85th at 168 (89-79). She was 2 over after 10 holes but dropped five shots over the last eight holes.
Senior Rebecca Hellbom, the Lobos' No. 1 golfer, never got on track. She ended at 170 (89-81), finishing 87th in the 90-player field.
"For whatever reason, we are having a hard time getting steady play from all five golfers," said UNM head coach Jill Trujillo. "We have to work on that since we only have one tournament remaining before conference championships."
USC's Sophia Popov won the individual title at 142 (71-71). She was the only golfer to break par.
The Lobos' next tournament is March 30-April 1 at the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
