Calvo Tied For First After Opening Round

– The UNLV women’s golf team opened up the 2012 Ping/ASU Invitational in a big way, closing the first round in a tie for fifth place in the 17-team field which includes five of the top 10 ranked schools in the nation. The Rebels carded their lowest team score in a round this year, turning in a 3-over 287 on the par-71 Karsten Golf Course in Tempe.

Rebel senior Bethany Calvo turned in a 4-under par opening round to tie Justine Lee (Arizona State) for the clubhouse lead. Calvo carded birdies on the third, fourth and eighth holes on the front side to race out to a 3-under score. Following bogies on the ninth and 10th holes, the senior rattled birdies on 11, 13 and 16 for an opening round 67.

“A great round for Bethany today,” said second-year head coach Amy Bush. “She hit great shots and we are extremely proud of her. The team has been playing good this spring and we are looking forward to the next two rounds against some of the best teams in the country.”

Host and Fifth-ranked Arizona State holds a four shot lead in the team standings over No. 1 UCLA and No. 39 Stanford. The Sun Devils fired a 4-under team score on day one. No. 26 UC Davis is in fourth at 2-over with UNLV and No. 13 Texas A&M tied for fifth at +3.

Sophomore transfer Charlotte Brooks turned in a 1-under par 70 and stands in a four-way tie for ninth place. Brooks also opened the front nine with three birdies at the first, fourth and fifth before a double on the par-3 seventh dropped her to 1-under. Brooks carded five birdies in the opening round against two bogies and a double bogey in her first tournament since the Bruin/Wave Invitational March 5-7.

Freshman Mayko Chwen Wang will enter the second round in a 15-way tie for 22nd place after a 1-over 72 in the opening round. Wang carded a pair of birdies on the front nine on the par-4 second and the par-3 sixth and added a birdie on the 13 and an eagle on the par-5 14th.

Calvo and Lee hold a one-shot lead over Manon Gidali (Arizona), Tiffany Lua (UCLA), Marissa Mar (Stanford) and Sally Watson (Stanford). Laura Blanco (Arizona State) and Sadena Parks (Washington) are tied for seventh and two shots back at 2-under.

Dana Finkelstein and Katerina Prorokova round out the Rebel lineup this week in Tempe. Finkelstein shot a 7-over 78 while Prorokova is one shot back of her after an opening-round 79.

UNLV will kick off round two starting at 8:10 a.m. and will be paired with UC Davis and Texas A&M.
