Raastad Keys Final-Round TCU Surge
April 1, 2012
TEMPE, Ariz. -- Rachel Raastad carded a 68 while Brooke Beeler recorded an eagle to lead a final round TCU surge Sunday that moved the Horned Frogs into a fourth-place finish at the PING/ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
Raastad recorded four birdies and just one bogey en route to tying for third place individually, her best finish in a tournament since being the runner-up at the 2010 Mountain West Championships. All four of Raastad's birdies came in a 10-hole stretch. Her two-lowest rounds of the season occurred in the tournament's final two days. She had an even-par 71 Saturday.
Raastad's 3-under-par 68 marked her lowest round since a 67 in her second collegiate tournament on Sept. 23, 2008 at the Ron Moore Intercollegiate in Highlands Ranch, Colo.
A senior from Asker, Norway, Raastad concluded play with a 1-over 214 to place just two strokes behind co-medalists Ani Gulugian of UCLA and Demi Runas of UC Davis.
Raastad is the third Horned Frog to post a top-five finish this season and the fourth with a top-15 result.
Beeler recorded her second eagle of the spring on the par 5, 484-yard fifth hole. She added two birdies, including on her opening hole, en route to a final-round 74 to tie for 24th.
The PING/ASU Invitational featured nine teams ranked in the top 25, including five in the top 10. The 42nd-ranked Horned Frogs finished ahead of No. 3 USC, No. 7 Vanderbilt, No. 8 LSU, No. 11 Oklahoma State, No. 19 Arizona, No. 23 Washington, No. 26 UC Davis, No. 31 Texas and No. 39 Stanford.
TCU's final round 9-over 293 tied for the tournament's third-lowest score on the day. The Horned Frogs were consistent over the weekend, shooting a 292 Friday and a 294 Saturday.
Top-ranked UCLA won the team title with a 5-over 857, 12 strokes ahead of No. 5 and host Arizona State. TCU was 22 shots off the pace with an 879.
April McCoy and Sanna Nuutinen added a final-round 75 and 76, respectively, for TCU. McCoy, who tied for 26th individually, had a pair of birdies on the back nine. Nuutinen birdied three of her opening eight holes.
