De Roey Tied for Lead at MW Women's Golf Championships

April 20, 2012

Lobo sophomore Manon De Roey made three birdies over the final six holes to shoot even par 72 and share the first round lead at the Mountain West Women's Golf Championships in Litchfield Park, Ariz.

De Roey (38-34) was 3 over on her round after a bogey on No. 12, but she picked up birdies at 13, 16 and 17 to shoot 34 on the back. Colorado State's Christina Spinzig and Christine Wong from San Diego State also shot 72. For De Roey, it's her third 72 in the past four rounds. She has a team-best 75.4 scoring average over the past 10 rounds.

UNM shot a 22-over 310 at the challenging Wigwam Resort Gold Course (par 72, 6,208 yards), and is tied with Colorado State for third place in the seven-team field. UNM trails leader TCU (304) by six shots. San Diego State is second at 307.

It was deja vu for the Lobos. After 12 holes today, New Mexico was 21 over. However, in the final six holes, UNM lost just one stroke. Last year, the Lobos played the first nine holes of the championships in 12 over, but were just 8 over for the final 45 holes.

"I'm not real sure why we came out so slow," said head coach Jill Trujillo. "It was very similar to last year. Hopefully, we will play the next two days like we did last year, too. Manon was super today. It was starting to slip away after she bogeyed No. 12, but she made some clutch shots down the stretch."

UNM sophomores Sammi Stevens and Sofia Hoglund shot 78. Stevens (41-37) was 6 over after a third straight bogey on No. 10, but she finished with eight straight pars. Hoglund (42-36) lost seven shots in holes 5 through 9, but she steadied herself on the back nine with one birdie, seven pars and a bogey.

UNM's two seniors, Rebecca Hellbom and Senior Sarah Salvo, had an extremely rough start. Hellbom, who has never finished lower than ninth at this tournament, shot an 82 (39-43), by far her highest score in 10 career rounds at the MW Championships. She was 1 over after a par on No. 8, but gave up nine shots over the last 10 holes. Salvo came in at 84 (43-41), her highest score of the season.

Second round action begins Saturday at 8 a.m. MT. The Lobos are paired with TCU and San Diego State with tee times from 9:40-10:20 a.m.
