Defending Champion TCU Leads After First Round of 2012 MW Women's Golf Championship

LITCHFIELD PARK, Ariz. - No. 35 TCU carded a 16-over-par 304 today to secure the lead after the first round of the 2012 Mountain West Women's Golf Championship on the Gold Course at the Wigwam Resort in Litchfield Park, Ariz. The Horned Frogs hold a three-shot lead over second-place and 45th-ranked San Diego State, who is 19-over at 307 after 18 holes of play. No. 48 New Mexico and Colorado State are tied for third with identical scores of 22-over 310. No. 47 UNLV trails by one stroke at 23-over 311, while Boise State and Wyoming round out the team standings with marks of 24-over 312 and 29-over 317, respectively.
Three golfers, including Colorado State's Christina Spinzig, New Mexico's Manon DeRoey and San Diego State's Christine Wong, pace the field after each student-athlete fired an even-par 72 on the 6,208-yard Gold Course. TCU's Sanna Nuutinen sits in fourth place at 1-over 73, while Boise State's Hayley Young, CSU's Brianna Espinoza and SDSU's Malin Enarsson are knotted in fifth place with cards of 3-over 75.
DeRoey, Espinoza and Wong each had three birdies on the day, as did UNLV's Mayko Chwen Wang.
The second round of the 2012 Mountain Women's Golf Championship will begin Saturday morning at 7 a.m. PT, followed by the final 18 holes on Sunday at 7 a.m. The public is invited to come out and watch some of the best teams in collegiate golf.
