– The UNLV women’s golf team opened up first-round action at the 2012 Mountain West Championship Tournament with a team round of +23, 311 at the par-72 Wigwam Resort Gold Course.

Defending champion TCU carded a +16, 304 team score and will head into the second round with a three-shot lead over second-place San Diego State who carded a 19-over, 307. New Mexico and Colorado State are tied for third at 22-over par after turning in a 310 team score.

Boise State is in sixth at +24 while Wyoming checks in at seventh following a 29-over par first round.

Christina Spinzig (Colorado State), Manon De Roey (New Mexico) and Christine Wong (San Diego State) are all tied for first after opening-round 72’s. Sanna Nuutinen (TCU) stands in fourth at +1 while Hayley Young (Boise State), Brianna Espinoza (Colorado State) and Malin Enarsson (San Diego State) are all tied for fifth after turning in 3-over rounds of 75.

UNLV was led by freshmen Dana Finkelstein and Mayko Chwen Wang each carded rounds of 76, sitting at 4-over par. Finkelstein made the turn at 1-over and after bogies at No. 10 and 11, the Arizona native birdied the par-4 13th.

Wang shot 2-over on each side to keep pace with Finkelstein while senior Bethany Calvo stands just one shot back from the freshmen and tied for 12th after turning in a 5-over 76. After a front nine card of 4-over 40, Calvo made par on three straight to open the back nine before a double bogey on the par-4 13th dropped her to +6. Calvo recovered and birdied the par-5 14th to get back to +5 and finished with three consecutive pars.

Katerina Prorokova is tied for 25th after an opening round 86 while Charlotte Brooks rounds out the UNLV lineup at +12 and tied for 32nd.

The Rebels are set to kick off round two action at 7:50 a.m. tomorrow morning. UNLV and Colorado State are paired together for the second round.
