Rebels Finish Third At Season Opener

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (UNLVRebels.com) - The UNLV women's golf team shot a final-round 9-over 297 on Tuesday and climbed two spots in the standings to finish in third place at the season-opening Colonel Bill Wollenberg's Ptarmigan Ram Classic, which was played at the Ptarmigan Country Club (par 72, 6,302 yards).
The Rebels finished the tournament with a 54-hole total of 27-over 891. Texas Tech was the only team under par for the event, as it turned in a 4-under total of 860 to claim the team title after a final-round 3-under 285. Baylor finished second, 27 shots back at 23-over 887. San Jose State was fourth at 28-over, while there was a four-way tie for fifth between Louisville, Nevada, Reno, Long Beach State and New Mexico, all at 32-over.
New Mexico's Manon DeRoey earned individual medalist honors by four shots at 9-under 207 after a final-round 2-under 70. Texas Tech's Kimberly Kaufman finished second at 5-under.
UNLV was led by sophomore Mayko Chwen Wang, who finished tied for 10th at 4-over 220 after a final-round 1-over 73. Sophomore Marguerite Swearingen tied for 16th at 8-over 148 after a final-round 4-over 76.
Other Rebels: sophomore Dana Finkelstein tied for 20th at 9-over 225 after a final-round 1-over 73, while juniors Charlotte Brooks and Demi Mak both tied for 35th at 12-over 228. Brooks shot a final-round 6-over, while Mak was 3-over on the final day..
The tournament featured 17 teams and 90 individuals.
UNLV will be back in action September 17-18 at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M.
