Fresno, Calif. -- The Fresno State women's golf team played two impressive rounds Saturday at the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Springs, Calif. and finished day one in 1st place.
The Bulldogs shot four over par for a score of 291-289--580. Historically, 289 is the 'Dogs third lowest score. The 'Dogs shot 287 at UNLV in 2007. However, 580 is the lowest 36-hole total for the Bulldogs.
"The experiences we've had earlier this season have really prepared us for this moment and we do have a lot of confidence and we do have a lot of belief in each other and the team," Cates-Moore said.
The Bulldogs had a total of 29 birdies in day one of this two-day Wyoming hosted tournament.
In round one, Christine Uhalde finished one under par (71) for 3rd place. Uhalde swung her way to a 1st place finish in round two. Uhalde shot three under par (69) for a total score of 140.
Uhalde made five birdies and one eagle holing out from 118 yards with a wedge. Uhalde has been in a similar first place position before as a co-champion golf medalist at Stanford in Feb. 2012.
"Christine had a great afternoon round," Cates-Moore said. "All day she was making a lot of great putts and she made a lot of birdies. She knows how to handle herself and she will be prepared in the morning."
Madchen Ly finished round one in a tie for 1st place and slid to a tie for 5th place in round two. Ly shot two under par and played a bogey free round in round one. Ly completed day one of the tournament with a three over par 147 score.
"Madchen is playing with a lot of confidence and belief in her game and it is just great to watch her manage her game out on the golf course right now," Cates-Moore said.
"We feel good about tomorrow," Cates-Moore said. "We are going to go out there and play one shot at a time and focus on our routines and commit to our targets."
The Bulldogs will tee-off day two of the Cowgirl Desert Intercollegiate on Sunday morning at Classic Club.
