Women's Golf recap: Rams battle wind at Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown
Oct. 22, 2012
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The Colorado State women’s golf team put together a much-improved showing on Day 2 of the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown on Monday. The Rams pared 12 strokes off their team score from Sunday’s opening round despite windy conditions that included gusts of 35-40 miles per hour at the Stallion Mountain Golf Club.
“Today we played in heavy wind all day,” said interim head coach Susan Jennings. “The wind was steady on our back nine today at about 30 mph. It was gusting more than that so it made it very hard for club selections. It was just difficult to get the ball on the green with the wind. ”
But despite the difficult conditions, four of the Rams’ five competitors improved their scores from Round 1 to Round 2, with the exception being team-leader Betsy Kelly who matched her opening round 76 (+4) to remain in the hunt for a top-20 individual finish. Kelly closed the second round of action just one stroke out of the top-20 with a two-round total of 152 (+8).
Senior Cecilie Krefting saw the biggest improvement in her game from Day 1 (84) to Day 2 (78), shaving six strokes off her score. Krefting sits in a tie for 81st, two strokes off the pace of junior Emily Roering, who also posted a second-round score of 78, after firing an 83 to open play.
Juniors Sarah Roering and Christina Spinzig each carded second-round totals of 82, an improvement of one stroke for Roering, and three strokes for Spinzig. Roering is tied for 88th, while Spinzig sits alone in 93rd.
The Rams will look to continue to improve during Tuesday’s final round of action, the team’s final competition of the fall season.
“We did play better today but after yesterday’s round, it is difficult to move up when the conditions were as difficult as they were today,” added Jennings. “We shot ourselves out of it yesterday, but tomorrow we will just give our best effort to have a good round and finish the fall season on a good note.”
The shotgun start is slated for a 7:45 a.m. PT and Colorado State will be paired with Washington State and North Texas. Live scoring is available at www.GolfStat.com.
