Lobos Open Spring Season Saturday at Stanford

The University of New Mexico women's golf team opens its 2013 spring season Saturday at the Peg Barnard Invitational at Stanford, Calif. Playing at the Stanford Golf Course, the 11-team field will play 36 holes on Saturday starting at 10 a.m. MDT then the final 18 holes Sunday beginning at 9:30 a.m.

THE FIELD - New Mexico, host Stanford and California, UC Davis, Fresno State, Nevada, Rollins, San Francisco, San Jose State, Santa Clara and Washington.

UNM PARTICIPANTS - The Lobos will be represented by senior Beth Buchner, juniors Manon De Roey, Sofia Hoglund and Sammi Stevens and freshman Ira Knopf.

DE ROEY HAS GREAT SEMESTER, LEADS MW IN SCORING - Junior Manon De Roey had a tremendous start to her junior season. She won her first collegiate tournament and set a school record in the process. De Roey begins the spring leading the Mountain West in scoring at 73.25, a figure that ranks 56th nationally.

De Roey opened the season by winning the Colonel Bill Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic in Windsor, Colo. She carded a 207 (69-68-70), the lowest 54-hole total by a UNM women's golfer. The previous record was 208 held by former All-American Jodi Ewart at the 2009 Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational at the UNM Championship Course.

De Roey finished 9 under, the third best score in relation to par by a Lobo. Ewart was 11 under at the 2009 McGuire while Caroline Keggi finished 10 under at the 1986 Roadrunner Invitational at the New Mexico State University course in Las Cruces.

While winning the title comfortably by four shots over Texas Tech's Kimberly Kaufman, De Roey posted the three lowest rounds of her UNM career. She prevoiously shot 71 on three occasions.

De Roey was named Mountain West Golfer of the Month for her stellar performances in September.

After winning in Colorado, the junior collected her second top 10 finish at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational Sept. 17-18. She posted a 54-hole total of 1-over 220 (75-72-73) to tie for ninth at the UNM Championship Course.

In six rounds, De Roey recorded four rounds under par. It's the first career MW Golfer of the Month award for De Roey.

• Junior Sammi Stevens is tied for 5th in the Mountain West in scoring at 75.08

• Stevens is 9th all-time at UNM with a career scoring average of 76.08

• Stevens' low round of the fall was 70 in the 2nd round of the Branch Law Firm Dick McGuire Invitational and the

2nd round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational

• Stevens' best finish in the fall was a tie for 13th (2 over 221) at the McGuire

• Senior Beth Buchner's best finish of the fall was a tie for 10th at the Colonel Bill Wollenberg Ptarmigan Ram Classic...she shot 4-over 220, including a season-best 70 in the 2nd round

HEAD COACH Jill Trujillo - A 1990 UNM graduate and golf letterwinner from 1987-90, Jill Trujillo is in her sixth season in charge of the women's golf program. Trujillo has led New Mexico to five team titles, including three consecutive Mountain West Conference championships from 2008-10, and NCAA postseason every year. She was named 2007-08 MWC Coach of the Year.

Trujillo was head coach when UNM advanced to the 2007 NCAA Championships at Daytona Beach, Fla. The Lobos finished 22nd at the Championships in 2007, 19th in 2009 and tied for 16th in 2010.

PROGRAM RECORD FOR GPA - The UNM women's golf team established a program semester record for highest grade point average last fall with a 3.79 (on a 4.0 scale). It was the highest GPA among the 16 Lobo sports programs during the 2012 fall semester. The previous high for the golf program was 3.78 in the spring of 2005.
