Finkelstein Earns Conference Honor
Feb. 27, 2013
LAS VEGAS (UNLVRebels.com) -- UNLV sophomore Dana Finkelstein has been selected the Mountain West Women’s Golfer of the Week for tournaments played February 20-26, the conference office announced Wednesday. This is the first time Finkelstein has been named the MW Golfer of the Week but was previously named the MW Golfer of the Month in February and October of 2012.
In the first tournament of the spring, Finkelstein registered the highest individual finish of her career. She tied for second place out of 60 golfers at the Cal Classic, held in Livermore, Calif., on February 25-26.
“We are really excited for Dana,” head coach Amy Bush said. “She had a great tournament at the Cal Classic and it’s a great way to start the spring season.”
The Chandler, Ariz. native carded an even-par 144 (74-70) on the par-72, 6,304-yard Ruby Hills Golf Course. Finkelstein recorded seven birdies across the 36-hole tournament and shot a final round 2-under, which tied her career low and was the third-lowest round in the tournament. Her second-place tie also marked Finkelstein’s fourth career top-five finish.
“I’m really pleased with how I played in the first tournament of the spring,” Finkelstein said. “The team played well and I’m happy to just contribute. It is an honor to be recognized by the conference, especially twice in one year. My goal is just to keep playing well and help the team.”
In 17 rounds played this season, Finkelstein has turned in seven rounds of par or better, including three rounds under par. The sophomore currently sits second in the Mountain West with a 73.94 stroke average.
As a team, UNLV posted its fourth top-five finish of the 2012-13 season, as the Rebels placed fifth out of 11 teams with a score of 27-over 603 (302-301).
UNLV will head back to California next week to participate in the Bruin Wave Invitational in Woodland Hills, Calif. The first round begins at 8 a.m. on Monday, March 4. Live scoring will be available off a link at UNLVRebels.com, courtesy of Golfstat.
