Women's Golf Gears up for Bruin Wave Invitational

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team returns to action this week when it travels to the greater Los Angeles area for the Bruin Wave Invitational, March 4-5, in Tarzana, Calif. The Aztecs, who are ranked 74th nationally by golfstat.com, are among a field of 15 schools scheduled to compete in the fourth annual event, which consists of two rounds on Monday, followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday.
SDSU will joined at the par-72, 6,131-yard El Caballero Country Club by seven squads ranked in the top 40, including No. 1 USC, No. 8 Arizona, No. 20 UCLA, No. 21 Oklahoma State, No. 31 Denver, No. 33 Pepperdine and No. 40 UNLV, while Hawai'i, Long Beach State, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Oregon State and Washington State round out the list of competing teams.
Day one will feature a shotgun start at 8 a.m. PT, while the final round gets underway Tuesday with tee times on holes No. 1 and No. 10 as early as 7:30 a.m. Live results for both days will be available courtesy of golfstat on www.goaztecs.com.
Aztec senior Christine Wong (Richmond, British Columbia) is the Bruin Wave Invitational's defending individual champion after carding a 3-over 219 to win by four strokes over Alina Ching (+7) of Pepperdine, which captured the team title. SDSU finished a collective fifth in the standings last year behind the Waves, UCLA, Oklahoma State and UNLV.
In addition to Wong, head coach Leslie Spalding's starting lineup features freshman Emma Henrikson (Malmö, Sweden), sophomores Amy Alston (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Paige Spiranac (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and junior Maureen Dunnagan (Lexington, S.C.), while fellow classmate Rebecca Schneider (Cave Creek, Ariz.) will compete as an individual.
The Aztecs are coming off a solid third-place team finish in their last outing at the inaugural Cal Classic, Feb. 24-25, in Pleasanton, Calif., where three players placed among the top 20 individually. Spiranac took fifth after firing a two-round total of 1-over 145; Alston tied for the 14th position at 5-over 149, while Wong finished in a tie for 18th with a 7-over 151.
For the season, Henrikson leads SDSU with a 75.24 stroke average through 17 rounds, which is tied for seventh in the Mountain West, followed by Wong, who is ranks 11th with an average of 75.94.
Following the Bruin Wave Invitational, the Aztecs will head east for the SunTrust Gator Invitational, March 15-17, at Mark Bostick Golf Course in Gainesville, Fla.
